Space Hacker Workshop 2013 :: Hacker Dojo

SPACEnews :: I often wondered how and when the maker movement would impact advances in aerospace. There have been a lot of high-altitude balloon projects done out there, DIY drones, amateur rocketry, but this is the first article I've seen, from SPACE.com, to tackle the subject with any great depth.

'Space Hackers' Take On Citizen Science for Suborbital Spaceflight takes a look at the first ever Space Hacker Workshop held in Mountain View California, at the Hacker Dojo.

While the workshop focused on developing projects to be flown on an upcoming fleet of privately built spacecraft (XCOR's Lynx and Virgin's SpaceShipTwo were mentioned), this small first step will hopefully establish a subset of "space hackers" who will increasingly leverage the technology and collaborative workflow being refined in hackerspaces around the world for greater and more direct participation in space exploration.

As more private companies develop their own spacecraft, and as both manufacturing technology and launch costs drop, we'll see more ambitious projects done in collaboration with more diverse organizations.
